Shopify Quiz Builders: What to Look For

A product recommendation quiz does two things at once: it helps a shopper choose, and it tells you why they chose. On a store with a wide catalogue or a considered purchase, it's usually the highest-leverage thing you can add.

This guide covers what to look for in a quiz builder, then how to build one.

What separates quiz builders

Most tools can ask questions and show a result. The differences that matter in practice:

  • Does it read your live catalogue? A quiz that recommends from a hard-coded list goes stale the moment you change pricing or stock. One connected to Shopify pulls product data live.
  • Can it recommend conditionally, or only route to fixed results? Fixed outcomes mean building a result page per combination. Conditional product filtering scales without that.
  • Where do the answers go? If they stay in the quiz tool, you've helped one shopper once. If they write to your email platform as fields and tags, every future campaign can use them.
  • Can it score, or only branch? Scoring lets you handle many answer combinations without mapping each one.
  • Can you A/B test it against revenue? Completion rate is easy to measure and the wrong target — a quiz with fewer completions and higher AOV is the better quiz.

The last three are where most tools stop.

Step 1: Plan before you build

Three to five questions. Every extra one costs completions, and a partially finished quiz gives you nothing.

Only ask what changes the recommendation or the follow-up. A question whose answer doesn't filter products, apply a tag or populate a field is costing you completions for nothing.

Decide up front which products each outcome recommends, and which tag the shopper gets.

Step 2: Add questions

Click to add an element, choose the Quiz type, then Add Question.

Choose between simple surveys, image surveys, icon, colour, letter or emoji surveys. Questions can also be form fields — text, dropdown, numerical input or range slider.

Use image questions where the choice is visual. Asking someone to pick a style, a room or a finish from photographs consistently beats a list of adjectives — both on completion rate and on how accurate the answer is.

Each answer has a label and a value. The label is what the shopper sees; the value is what your conditions match against.

Answers can also increment or decrement a score.

Step 3: Style it once

Theme-level styling covers headings, buttons and progress bars across the whole quiz.

Show the progress bar. On a multi-step quiz it measurably reduces abandonment, because shoppers can see how much is left.

Step 4: Connect Shopify

Go to Settings → Integrations and connect Shopify.

This is what lets the results step pull live product data — images, names, pricing and variants — so the quiz doesn't need updating when your catalogue changes.

Step 5: Build the recommendation

Add a product element to the results step and configure which products show.

Then make it conditional on the answers.

Conditional filtering is what keeps this manageable. Rather than building a results page for every combination, you set rules and the same page adapts.

Add the product to cart directly from the results step where you can — sending a shopper who has just told you what they want to a collection page to find it themselves loses most of the value.

Step 6: Capture and route

Put the email field on the results step, after the quiz has delivered something.

Then use conditional actions to apply a different tag per outcome.

Every answer can also map to a field in your email platform — which is the difference between a quiz that sells once and one that improves every campaign afterwards.

Step 7: Launch and test

Preview first; automations don't run, so you can check the logic without creating contacts.

Then read the funnel report question by question.

Two things to look at:

  • Per-question drop-off. The question with the steepest drop is either too personal, too early, or badly worded. Cut or move it.
  • Revenue per outcome, not completion rate. A quiz with fewer completions and a higher AOV is the better quiz, and completion rate alone will point you the wrong way.
