Connect For FreeExit-intent popups fire when a shopper moves to leave — cursor heading for the browser chrome on desktop, or a back-tap on mobile. The pitch is that you're catching people who were leaving anyway, so the interruption costs you nothing.
That's mostly true, and it's why exit-intent is the default trigger for welcome offers on Shopify. But it's worth being honest about where the idea is oversold before you build one.
It works better than an immediate timed popup, for a straightforward reason: the shopper has already browsed. They've seen a product, formed some opinion, and the popup arrives at the moment they're deciding to go. That's a better moment than two seconds after landing, when they know nothing about you.
Two caveats that don't get mentioned often enough:
Mobile exit-intent isn't really exit-intent. There's no cursor to track. Implementations fire on a back-tap or on scroll-up velocity, which are rougher signals. Since most Shopify traffic is mobile, a large share of your "exit-intent" impressions are approximations — so check how the trigger behaves on a phone before assuming desktop results carry over.
It's not the best trigger on every page. On a product page where someone has added to cart, a cart trigger catches better intent. Exit-intent is the right default for cold traffic, not a universal answer.
On Shopify you have three routes:
The thing worth comparing isn't whether a tool has exit-intent — they all do. It's whether you can suppress the popup for existing subscribers, target it by collection, and A/B test the offer against revenue rather than opt-ins. Below we'll build one in ConvertFlow.
Create a campaign and choose a popup format.

Overlay is the standard choice for exit-intent — the shopper is leaving, so a corner hook rarely gets noticed.

Set styling at theme level first so every element inherits it.

In the Settings tab, choose exit-intent as the trigger.
Then set suppression — how many days the popup stays hidden after someone closes it.

This matters more with exit-intent than other triggers. Someone browsing four product pages can plausibly trigger exit-intent four times in one session. Without suppression, that's the same offer four times, which is how a store starts feeling desperate.
Click any element to edit its content.

A percentage discount is the default, and it works. It also trains repeat shoppers to trigger the popup deliberately before buying. A free gift, free shipping or early access converts comparably without that side effect.

Go to Settings → Integrations and connect Shopify. The script installs automatically, with no theme editing.

Then connect wherever subscribers should land — Klaviyo, Omnisend, Mailchimp, Attentive, Postscript and others.

Select the form, click Manage Actions, then add the automation that subscribes the shopper.

Show the discount code immediately rather than only emailing it. A shopper who was already leaving is not going to check their inbox and come back.

Click Launch to set targeting.

Do the subscriber exclusion first. With your email platform connected, ConvertFlow can read your lists and hide the popup from anyone already on them.
This is the setting most exit-intent implementations skip, and it's the one that costs most. Your repeat customers trigger exit-intent constantly — so without it, a large share of impressions go to people who cannot convert, dragging your measured rate down and irritating your best shoppers.
You can also target by collection, so a shopper leaving a sale collection sees a different offer from one leaving full-price.
Toggle to activate.

Preview first — automations don't fire in preview, so you won't add yourself to a list.

Then split-test, and read revenue per variant rather than opt-in rate.

The test worth running first isn't the headline. It's exit-intent against cart-add on your product pages. Exit-intent catches more people; cart-add catches better ones. Which wins depends on your store, and the revenue column is the only way to tell.
